Laser milling for micro tooling
نویسنده
چکیده
Laser milling provides a new method of producing components for the micro tool manufacturing industry. This paper considers the technical capabilities of laser milling when applied to the machining of components for micro tooling. Characteristics important for laser milling as a micro tooling manufacturing process are reviewed. These characteristics are surface finish, aspect ratio, dimensional accuracy and minimum feature size. Laser systems use a broad spectrum of pulse durations, ranging from microseconds to femtoseconds. A study is presented of the impact of pulse duration on the surface quality as represented by the surface roughness and extent of the heat affected zone (HAZ) and recast layer.

Dmls – Development History and State of the Art
This paper summarizes the state of the art of direct metal laser-sintering (DMLS) in 2004, put into perspective by a review of its history from its roots in the 1970s, and discusses the trends going into the future. Since the 1970s, DMLS has evolved from an idea to a powerful commercial technology. The "family tree" of DMLS is explained with reference to related methods such as laser-cladding, ...
متن کاملElectro-chemical polishing: a technique for surface improvements after laser milling
Electro-chemical polishing is a process of improving micro smoothness, micro topology, and material brightness by anodic dissolving of the substrate in an electrolyte with an external source of electricity. The resulting surface improvements depend on the uniformity of the material microstructure, the lack of surface inclusions, and the consistency of the surface finish all over the target area...
